Tough and fair asylum policy: In Austria, returns exceeded first-time asylum applications
The Cabinet decision further advances the implementation of the Asylum and Migration Pact, a key component of the government programme, and introduces stricter asylum regulations.
The aim of the Pact is to sustainably reduce irregular migration through a comprehensive package of measures and, in particular, to significantly ease the burden on the education and integration systems.
“Consistent returns are part of a tough and fair asylum policy. The asylum and migration pact adopted yesterday lays the groundwork for this,” emphasized minister of Interior Gerhard Karner on the occasion of another returns.
A clear focus is placed on the removal of convicted offenders and individuals without the right to remain in the country. The latest figures underline this approach: 2,270 removals in January and February compared to 768 first-time asylum applications.
