Asylum: Lowest number since 2020 – Family Reunification Down 94%

The long-term measures of the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior to reduce irregular migration and family reunification are showing results, as current asylum statistics from February 2025 indicate.

Following the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, asylum applications from Syrians were suspended and revocation procedures were initiated for refugees with Syria as their country of origin.

This marks a 76 percent decrease compared to February 2024. Only 86 out of 315 asylum applications (27.3 percent) were new. Most of the applications come from children born in Austria to Syrian parents.

Applications from Afghan citizens have also declined sharply. In February 2025, they submitted 1,397 asylum applications, the lowest number since summer 2020. Strict controls and the suspension of asylum applications for Syrians are also reflected in the family reunification figures.
