Asylum Applications Down 60%, Record Number of Returns
On January 24, 2025, the Ministry of the Interior of Austria presented the annual figures for 2024: 13,307 returns and 24,941 asylum applications.
In 2024, 24,941 asylum applications were submitted in Austria. This is a massive decrease compared to previous years: around 60,000 in 2023 and more than 110,000 in 2022. This means that the number of asylum applications fell by 58 percent (compared to 2023) and 80 percent (compared to 2022).
In 2024, an average of 36 people were returned every day, adding up to a total of 13,307, an increase of 3.2% compared to the previous year.
„Anyone who commits serious crimes in Austria has no place here. Regardless of whether they come from an EU member state, another European country, or another continent,“ said Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner. „At the same time, a credible, fair, and strict asylum policy must also carry out consistent returns. Those who have no right to stay in Austria, or who have forfeited that right, will be returned.”
